Robert Lee Givens a.k.a. R.L. Givens or 'Bob' to his close friends was named after Robert E. Lee, a general from the Civil War. Bob was a friend, mentor, and employer in the building of absolutely great mandolins. A warm friendly sort, mechanical genius and craftsman extraordinaire, he would roll quarters back and forth across his knuckles to practice manual dexterity. He would look through a stereoscope exercise card to keep his eyesight sharp. Bob built some of the finest mandolins and guitars this world has ever seen. He is greatly missed.

Givens Legacy Co. has continued Bob's line of instruments. A and F model mandolins as well as some dreadnaught guitars. I have also branched out with the Octave Mandolin, Acoustic Archtop and electric guitars. The Octave Mandolin was a natural evolution with carved top and back. The resultant instrument is very pleasing with a big sound on it's 21 inch fret scale. It is more suited for celtic, classical, and folk music where mandolins and dreadnaught guitars are more specific to bluegrass.

The Archtop acoustic guitar evovled from conversations with Bob about neck angles relative to loudness projection and clarity of tone. With tailpiece rigged instruments, the bridge is free standing and relies on down pressure from the strings to 'connect' the acoustic transfer. The two prototypes listed on the 'Used' page have a fairly high neck angle for good sound transfer. F holes allow the top of the instruments to be built lighter than a sound hole in the carved top. Tone bars allow a free top response, compared to an X-braced archtop instrument. This leads to more open sound. You the customer will find that all of the carved top instruments here at Givens Legacy have tone bar bracing. Engelmann Spruce is used exclusively for it's properties. I find that Engelmann excels for tonal projection, loudness, and warm large tone.

Here in Cocolalla, Idaho for 30 some years and constructing the Givens Legacy for almost 15 years, this is still a 1 or 2 man shop with limited production. Anywhere from 12 - 30 units a year. I still find passion in building a great sounding instrument It's a pleasure to put one in the hands of a musician and listen to the spirit and soul evoke musical magic.

Givens Legacy are still built with Bob's masterful jigs, hot lacquer, and with the same construction process Bob used. The one thing I have added to this mix of Lutherie is my knowledge of wood. Having logged on and off for 35 years; Having cut millions of board feet of timber, I know good wood. All woods here are air dried. This maintains the elasticity, therefore they tool much better that kiln dried. Air dried wood also holds up better to changes in humidity. Most top woods are 20 years dry or better and I have not had one crack in over 15 years.

All instruments are sold 'on approval'. If you don't like it for any reason you can send it back for a full refund, less shipping. It is VERY rare for this to happen. Good friendss, good music, peace and love.
